The BBW Interview: A4 Brass Quartet

Award-winning A4 keeps it fresh!

A4 Quartet members have added the internationally prestigious Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition to the group’s mounting cache of awards as they continue to challenge rarified, classical music circles with brass band instrumentation. Katrina Marzella meets the group’s members.

‘Nothing about A4 Brass Quartet seems to follow convention, from the ensemble’s unique instrumentation, to the distinctive bright shirts worn by its members and their unprecedented journey from college ‘newbies’ to classical music elite.

Based in Manchester, the quartet comprises three ‘northern lads’ and a Scotsman, namely Jamie Smith (cornet), Jonny Bates (tenor horn), Mike Cavanagh (baritone horn) and Chris Robertson (euphonium). In March this year, they sent shockwaves through the classical music world when they won the globally-acclaimed Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Chamber Music Competition…’
