Music: Shepherd's Pipe Carol

By John Rutter, arranged by Nynke van der Heide
Lake Music Publications

Composer, Rodney Newton reviews music for band by John Rutter.

John Rutter was still a pupil at Highgate School, North London, when he penned the carol that was to make his name. Although he has made many memorable contributions to the choral repertoire over the intervening years, this youthful effort still retains its freshness and appeal. This latest arrangement by Nynke van der Heide opens with a flourish, before the carol melody is passed in lively fashion from section-to-section of the band. A calmer middle section leads to a development of the material and a light-hearted finish. Of medium difficulty, the piece lasts three minutes.
