CD: Music in the Air

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force
World of Sound: 22133CD

Jonathan Crowhurst, Director of the National Concert Band Symposium, reviews the latest CD from the Royal Air Force's flagship band, conducted by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs and Squadron Leader Piers Morrell

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force is one of the very few bands left in the services that does its very best to extend the concert band repertoire, whether it be serious or light works. Music In The Air is a combination of both, with a well thought-out blend of original repertoire and new arrangements of familiar classics, whilst showcasing some of the very talented soloists in the band.

The band’s conductor, Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs, is as talented as he is tall (he's very tall!), and guides the band meticulously and articulately through each work. The Salvation Army undertones are apparent throughout with Wilfred Heaton's powerful Celestial Prospect, Richard Phillips’s sensitive treatment of Amazing Grace and Audoire's classic march, Montreal Citadel, providing a deserved and respectful nod to R. Smith and Co's.Trade Winds mother company. Former RAF Central Band Director, Rob Wiffin, makes a couple of appearances with original repertoire, including the descriptive Timepiece alongside clever and eclectic arrangements by Kevin Horner, David Richards and Alastair Wheeler.

Thierry Deleruyelle's big band pastiche, High Voltage, sees the band under the baton of Squadron Leader Piers Morrell in a burst of energy, which provides lovely contrast with the eloquent playing of Graham Jones in Ray Farr's arrangement of Brahms Sonata for Clarinet No. 2 (First Movement).

There are fine solos throughout including by flautist Holly Blomfield, who plays Godard's Valse from Suite de Trois Morceaux with delicate refinement. Jeremy Bell's accessible The Wind Racers closes what is a pleasant and enjoyable disc.
