Music: High Five

By Darrol Barry
Published by Wright and Round

Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s Young Composer in Residence, Daniel Hall, reviews a recent release from Wright and Round

Works from the pen of Darrol Barry are most definitely favourites of audiences and musicians alike, from the beautiful sonorous melodies to fast and exciting lines, his music has it all and this composition is certainly no exception!

High Five is a bright piece of music, which has that much loved, feel good factor about it, making this item an idealistic crowd-pleaser.

Infectious melodies are passed around the ensemble, starting
with a bouncy phrase in the cornets, which digresses to a more flowing passage in the lower ensemble. After repetition from earlier material, the music climaxes to a grand finale expanding on the opening bell-like theme accompanied
by pulsating rhythms from the percussion section, which is rounded off by an exciting close in unison at fortissimo.

Whatever the occasion, this
is a composition that is guaranteed to draw the audience's attention, with not a dull moment in sight.
