Nick Birch is Marple’s new MD

Nick Birch, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, where he achieved his Master’s degree on Trombone and Bachelor’s degree on Euphonium has been appointed as the Musical Director of Marple Band. Nick is a well-known face to many across the brass banding community and has enjoyed tenures with several North-West bands, including Pemberton and Fairey’s. Most recently, he has been 2nd Trombone with Foden’s, a position he has had to relinquish in order to take up the new role. Foden’s to become the MD of The Marple Band.

In a statement on social media a spokesperson from Foden’s commented, “We are all sad to be saying goodbye to our 2nd Trombone player Nick Birch as he pursues a new career in conducting. Nick joined the band in October 2015 winning the National Brass Championships in 2018, 2021 and 2022, plus the British Open and Brass in Concert in 2023 and EIGHT North West Regional titles. With Foden’s he has also enjoyed tours to Denmark, Belgium, Holland, France, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, as well has being a regular tutor for both Foden’s Youth and Junior Bands. We wish Nick all the very best in his future musical ventures and we're sure he won't be a stranger!"

Alongside his playing career in brass bands, Nick is an experienced Musical Director. He has been the MD at Nantwich Concert Band since 2014 and became MD of Keele University Concert Band in 2022. Nick is looking forward to working with the talented members of The Marple Band, building on the band’s prestigious history.
