‘Brass Sounds’ for Marzella in Norway
Katrina Marzella made her conducting debut with Norwegian champion Eikanger Bjorsvik Musikklag in a concert in Bergen last weekend. ‘Brass Sounds’ included major works with Eric Ball’s ‘Festival Music’ and John Golland’s ‘Sounds’ bookending the first half and Philip Wilby’s ‘New Jerusalem’ providing and thrilling concert finale. The concert also featured Lucy Pankhurst's euphonium solo 'Midnight', which was given a masterful performance by Lars Otto Lunde Torsvik, and 'Into the Darkness They Go, The Wise and the Lovely' by Kelly-Marie Murphy.
A spokesperson for the National and Siddis Champion stated, "It was a delight to work with Katrina for a concert that covers such a wide spectrum of musical inspirations. It also reflects our commitment to excellence in diversity which is also seen throughout the Norwegian banding movement which is close to a 50/50 gender split. Katrina is of course hugely respected as world class performer with a growing reputation as a conductor. She has long been a musician we have wished to work with." Responding on social media to the overwhelming success of the event Katrina stated, “To all the players and the whole organisation - thank you! It’s been a simply fantastic week. All my very best wishes to each and every one of you”
