Calling Aspiring Female Conductors

NYMAZ is offering a six-month placement with Shepherd Group Brass Band from January to July 2024 to support aspiring, women conductors in an encouraging, inspiring environment. The chosen applicant will be able to develop conducting technique and skills with expert guidance through a mentorship programme led by Katrina Marzella and then practice those skills with support at regular Shepherd Group rehearsals.

A spokesperson for NYMAZ, the youth music development charity which champions the transformative potential of music for children and young people in North Yorkshire and beyond, explained, “We encourage applications from 18-25 year olds who identify as women, and wish to develop conducting and leadership skills. This project is part of our work to diversify the banding sector, and we recognise conducting as an area with significantly less women than men operating in this space.”

The charity is offering a fee of £75 for each regular rehearsal (12 rehearsals in total, amounting to £900), plus a travel budget and a bursary to support further training and conducting experiences as agreed with NYMAZ. You do not need to have significant experience in conducting to apply. You do not have to have experience leading an ensemble, however some experience in conducting technique or group leadership would be beneficial. Enthusiasm and commitment to developing musical leadership skills is more important than already having an advanced skillset. Time commitment will be three rehearsals each half-term throughout spring and summer.

To apply, please complete this form by Friday 8 December at 5pm. You can also submit your application by video. If you wish to discuss submitting a video or if you need any further support with your application, please contact NYMAZ at info@nymaz.org.uk or on 07761 525709.

Commenting on her role in the initiative Katrina Marzella stated, “I’m very excited to be part of this initiative by NYMAZ, Brass Bands England and Shepherd Group Brass Band. One of my major long-term goals is to encourage and inspire more women into conducting, and leadership roles generally, in classical music and brass bands. Those who are eligible - get in touch and go for it! Even if you’re unsure of your skill or experience, just put your name in the hat. In music, and life, talent will always rise, no matter who you are.”
