New Euphonium at Brighouse
Brighouse and Rastrick Band has announced the signing of Luke Spence on 2nd Euphonium. Luke hails from New Zealand and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the NZ School of music. He has won the NZ Young brass musician of the year, the NZ School of Music Brass Player of the year and was the 2018 Australian Euphonium Champion. In 2022 he was awarded the prize of most outstanding soloist in the A Grade Test piece at the NZ National contest, has competed at the British Open with Wellington Brass, and the 2017 World Championships in Kerkrade, with the National Band of NZ which gained second place.
Luke has performed with numerous ensembles including as Principal Euphonium of the National Band of NZ on their recent tour of Australia, Wellington Brass the current five time NZ Champions, Orchestra Wellington, the Royal NZ Air Force band, Mingus Jazz Ensemble, and the Footscray band from Melbourne on their 2019 tour of the UK and France. He is currently completing his Masters with David Thornton and Steven Mead after receiving a scholarship to study at the Royal Northern of College in Manchester.
A spokesperson for the band stated, “Luke took part in his first concert performance with the band last week in Saffron Walden, and has already shown how much of an asset he is going to be to B&R!”
