Cory RWCMD Composition Prize Launch
Cory Band and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWMCD) have announced the launch of its 2023 competition, the seventh time this has been held. Previous winners have been Andrew Wainwright (The Spirit of St Louis), Andy Wareham (Tarot, Tortuous Tarot) and last year’s winner Ben Fuller (The Tortoise and The Hare).
Applications are invited from composers to submit new pieces of no more than five minutes duration with a closing date of 1st September 2023. Cory Band will choose a shortlist of four, all of which will be rehearsed and recorded at RWCMD in November, with a series of short programmes broadcast on the band’s YouTube channel soon after with a public vote. This vote, alongside the verdict of three professional judges, will determine the winner which will then be added to Cory Band’s concert programmes, and published by Wright and Round Music Publishers. The winning entrant will receive a cheque for £300 sponsored by New Moon Insurance with whom Cory Band is partnering for the second year.
Announcing details of the competition, Cory Band Musical Director Philip Harper commented, “Creating opportunities for new music is something which is really important to all of us at Cory Band. Last year’s competition was particularly strong and we’re excited to see what this year’s composers come up with. We’re delighted again to be able to offer the chance for band fans all over the world to take part by listening, watching and voting, something which tens of thousands did last time.”
