BBC Young Musician of the Year 2022

 

The BBC Young Musician of the Year competition returns to television screens today (October 2nd) with the first of five Category Finals. Highlight programmes of each Category Final will be broadcast on BBC Four over a week, starting on Sunday 2nd October. They will be introduced by saxophonist and broadcaster Jess Gillam and classical soul pianist, composer, and producer Alexis Ffrench. 

Highlights from the Category Finals will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert slot from Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th October. The BBC Young Musician Grand Final was recorded at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on Thursday 29th September, and is scheduled for broadcast on BBC Four and BBC Radio 3 on Sunday 9th October. The five Category Winners competed for the prestigious title with a concerto performance with the BBC Philharmonic led by Mark Wigglesworth. The panel jury consisted of Anna Lapwood, Emma Bloxham, Toks Dada, Ben Gernon and Anoushka Shankar.

The Brass finalists are: Daniel Hibbert (17 — horn); Florence Wilson-Toy (17 — trumpet); Imogen Moorsom (18 — French horn); Phoebe Mallinson (16 — trumpet) and Sasha Canter (18 — trumpet)

The Percussion finalists are: Eric Zhang (15); George Garnett (18); Jordan Ashman (17); Joshua Gearing (17) and Sophie Warner (18)
