Lowena Taylor is Bodmin Youth Band’s New MD

Bodmin Youth Band has announced the appointment of Lowenna Taylor as its new Musical Director. Lowenna started playing at the age of 10 when she joined her local village band of Indian Queens. She then progressed onto St Dennis Band playing Solo Horn in both their senior and youth band as well as being appointed to principal horn of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band. In 2009, Lowenna moved to Cardiff to study music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she graduated in 2013 with a 1st class honours degree. During her time in Cardiff she played with a number of bands including Tredegar, Cory and City of Cardiff Melingriffith, playing at prestigious contests such as the National Finals, European Brass Band Championships and the British Open where she was part of the winning performance in 2010.

Lowenna moved back to Cornwall in 2020 and has enjoyed getting back to her roots. Commenting on her appointment Lowena stated, “I am very excited to be joining Bodmin Youth Band to help encourage the next generation in Cornwall to enjoy brass banding! I hope I can pass on some of my experience and knowledge to boost the already brilliant talent that Cornwall has to offer”.

Bodmin Youth Band formed in 2018 and has an enthusiastic membership of young people. They have had competition success and greatly enjoy playing a variety of music at local concerts including the last Port Elliot Festival. The band rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7pm at the Bodmin band room and welcomes new players. For any young people interested in learning a brass instrument, we also run a training band from 6.30pm. Our first rehearsal with Lowenna will be on 8th June.
