Robert Childs to lead Brass Band Summer School

The popular Brass Band Summer School (BBSS) will return to its regular, in-person format this August for what promises to be an extra special event, led by former Cory and Grimethorpe Colliery Musical Director, Robert Childs.

Following the sad passing of long-serving MD, Richard Evans, the BBSS will be directed by the renowned conductor and educator, Dr. Robert Childs, who returns to the organisation he was a founding tutor of in the mid ‘80s.

Commenting on his return to the BBSS Robert said: “The Brass Band Summer School has a wonderful history having been associated with some of banding’s great luminaries such as Harry Mortimer, Philip Jones, Roy Newsome, Philip Biggs, Richard Evans and many more. I consider it a great honour to return for the organisation’s 35th anniversary course, and I can’t wait to welcome delegates from all over the world for a wonderful week of music making.”

Set in the brass band heartlands of Yorkshire, the BBSS will take place at Harrogate Ladies College from 7-13 August, culminating in a Finale Gala Concert at Harrogate's Grade I listed Church of St. Wilfrid.

Joining Dr. Childs will be a world-class team of tutors and clinicians, including: Brass Band Battle Creek principals, Owen Farr and Les Neish; euphonium soloist, David Childs; English National Opera principal trombonist, Becky Smith; Whitburn principal cornetist, Chris Bradley; and Fairey’s legendary Brian Taylor. Cornet stars, Roger Webster and Alan Morrison, will also appear during the week and Roger will be the finale concert guest soloist.

In addition to band rehearsals, tutor recitals, ensemble showcases, master classes, a light-hearted entertainment competition, individual lessons and evening entertainment, this year's BBSS delegates will also have the opportunity to work with pianist, Matthew McCombie, as well as be part of a special finale concert, during which the lives of the School’s former Administrator, Philip Biggs, and MD, Richard Evans, will be celebrated.

Players of all nationalities and abilities are welcome. To book your place, visit: www.brassbandsummerschool.com
