Jubilee Celebrations continue for NYBBGB

In the NYBBGB’s 70th jubilee year the organisation has much to celebrate – the band continues to reflect on the heritage of the charity and the many members whose musical experiences it has helped to shape. The band has recently given two fabulous concert performances outside of the recent Easter Course. The first was at Coventry Cathedral as part of the New Music Biennial under the direction of Dr. Robert Childs and most recently in Birmingham Town Hall with the Band of the Royal Marines as the prelude event to the 2022 European Brass Band Festival with Irene Anda at the helm.

Prior to the concert in Birmingham a music workshop was held for 700 primary school children. Commenting on the workshop an NYBBGB spokesperson stated, “Seeing so many young people with instruments, enthusiastic about brass music and engaged with the whole day was truly wonderful, especially after so long away from large gatherings and performances. We hope to see many of them follow their passion and audition for our Children's Band, so we can help support this next generation of brass musicians.”

In addition to looking forward to the next generation the National Youth Band is also keen to preserve and celebrate its heritage. “Connecting with those former band members is important to us, which is why we’ve recently formed the NYBBGB Alumni & Associates committee who will help us engage with our alumni community, organising events and reunions for all former members. As the committee is a significant step for us as a charity, we thought we’d introduce the people behind it, volunteering their time and helping us to make a difference.

“We are delighted to announce that alumnus Richard Hillson has accepted the role of Chair of the Alumni and Associates committee. Richard is a cornet player who played in The NYBBGB in the late 1990s, and currently plays with the Triangle Brass Band in North Carolina, USA. Richard studied Law at the University of Nottingham, and has worked in investment banking for the last twenty years. He hopes to use his professional skills in finance, management and fundraising to help the NYBBGB develop and grow.”
