Rossier wins EBBA Composer’s Competition

 

Adjudicators Jan de Hann, Kenneth Hesketh and Professor Philip WIlby had the enviable job on Friday evening of judging the Final European Conductor’s Competition. Each work was displayed to the highest quality by Grimethorpe Colliery Band at Birmingham Town Hall. 

‘Stendhal’s Syndrome’ from the pen of Theo Rossier was awarded first place and prize money of 1,500 Euros in addition to a further 1,000 euros to support a future commission. English composer Andy Whareham claimed second place winning 1,000 euros for his work, ‘Machiavelli: Ruminations on The Prince’ as well as 500 euros to fund a future commission. Third prize of 500 euros and 250 euros to support future work went to Thibaut Bruniaux’s ‘Insecurity’. Bruniaux won a further 1,000 euros as his piece also won the audience prize and band prize.

Commenting on the evening MD Dr David Thornton stated, “A privilege to conduct Grimethorpe Colliery Band in the final of the EBBA composer’s competition. Three outstanding new works and a great evening with the band. Congratulations to all three composers and particularly Theo Rossier for the overall award.”
