Vlamo Composition Contest 2021 Results

For the first time, the VLAMO Composition Contest competition catered exclusively to new and high-quality fanfare repertoire for lower divisions in hopes that with this initiative, VLAMO would give fanfare bands a boost. In 2020, fanfare bands became part of the Flemish Inventory of Cultural Heritage and in 2021, they received an Ultima Cultural Heritage Award from the Flemish Government.

The VLAMO Composition Contest 2021 looked somewhat different from previous years. Instead of holding one annual contest for both concert band and fanfare band compositions, the competition focused exclusively on fanfare repertoire for third and second division (grade 1 and 2). On 31 October 2021, the registrations of this international contest closed with no less than 48 entries from 12 different countries.

A professional jury (Jan Van der Roost, Tom Hondeghem, Leon Vliex (NL)) examined all submitted works and announced the following results:

·         Winner 3rd division (grade 1): ‘A New World Fantasy’ - Jean-Pierre Haeck (BE)

·         Winner 2nd division (grade 2): ‘Legend of Kopakonan’ - Thom Zigterman (NL)

Both prize-winning compositions receive 2500 euro.

In the future, the contest will continue to alternate between the two disciplines, concert band and fanfare band. Consequently, the next VLAMO Composition Contest focuses on concert band repertoire to further stimulate and inspire composers to create a piece of music tailored to the intended type of orchestra and its instruments.
