Göta win the 2021 Swedish National Championhips

Congratulations to Göta Brass Band on winning the National Championships of Sweden last weekend. The contest organisers from the Swedish Brass Band Federation (SBBF) worked tirelessly to ensure that the ‘Plan B’ version of the event could be held, allowing the bands to compete in three regional contests, with the results then amalgamated to decide a national winner. Adjudicators Tom Brevik, Stanley West, Frode Rydland and Hakan Björkman began judging in the Stockholm area on Friday 12th November, before travelling to Bankeryd near Jönköping for those in the Smaland and Gothenburg region on Saturday, followed by Lund for the bands around Malmö on Sunday.

In the Championship Section Göta Brass Band, who were on impressive form under MD Michael Thomsen, claimed victory for fourth time in a row, with the win securing them the opportunity to compete in European Championship line-up at Symphony Hall ion Birmingham in May 2022. The band was awarded the top spot for both parts of the contest after giving a very fine account of the set-work, 'Ballet for Band' by Joseph Horovitz and a blistering own choice performance of Peter Graham’s 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. Daniel Björnell, the band's flugel player was also awarded 'Best Soloist' for his musicianship in the set test.

Windcorp and Solna Brass completed the podium placings having both given excellent performances of the set test and their own choice selections of ‘Dove Descending' and 'Dances & Arias' respectively. Asenhöga Brassband won the First Division title, under the direction of Patrik Randefalk and in the Second Division it was Limhamns Brassband, conducted by Jan-Eskil Andersson who claimed victory. Asenhöga was also victorious in the Minibrass Section where its Youth Brass Band delivered an assured short programme seeing them take the title ahead of Göteborg Youth Brass Band and Immanuel Minibrass, Enköping. There was also much talent on display in the non-competitive section and the full results from the weekend can be found below:
