RWCMD Cory Composition Prize 2022
Cory Band and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) have announced the return of their popular annual Composition Prize, which was last held in 2019, before the pandemic.
Composers are invited to submit new compositions for brass band before the deadline of 1st March 2022. Compositions can be up to five minutes long but must not have been previously performed, and should be for standard brass band instrumentation.
After the closing date four compositions will be shortlisted to be performed by Cory Band on stage at the RWCMD’s main concert hall, the Dora Stoutzker Auditorium. Each of the shortlisted entries will then be broadcast in a series of programmes in late Spring 2022 on Cory Band’s YouTube channel, after which an online public vote will decide the winner. The broadcast series will include interviews with the composers, expert opinion and insight, as well as the performance of each piece. At the conclusion of the series, an online public vote will decide the winner and the winning entry will win a cash prize of £300, as well as a publication contract for the new piece with Wright and Round Music Publishers and a pledge for it to be commercially recorded by the Cory Band.
Musical Director Philip Harper commented: “I’m so pleased to be able to relaunch this competition which encourages the creation of vibrant, new music for bands to play in their concerts. We have revamped several aspects of the competition, not least the switch to a public vote to decide the winner which we hope will result in a high level of engagement. The decision to make a short series of programmes to broadcast to our hugely increased online constituency was based mainly on our experiences of broadcasting our online competitions over lockdown, and we hope it means more people from all over the world can experience what is sure to be an exciting and dramatic event.”
