Salford International Online Brass Soloist Competition

Final year students from the University of Salford Alan Hobbins (Oldham Lees Band), Jeremie Favre (Leyland Band) and Elliot Gray (Leyland Band), are hosting a FREE online solo competition specifically aimed at the younger generation of brass players, as part of the musical events module, of their degree course.

The trio explained, “Unlike other solo competitions, you can decide the style, slow or fast, accompanied or unaccompanied.  It’s up to you to decide for yourself what your best asset is to impress the judges; we are purely looking for showmanship as a performer. We hope our contest gives you all an opportunity to play something in December other than Christmas music, and builds your confidence as a performer heading into the 2022 contest season. We would also like to encourage future music students, particularly in the intermediate section, to consider studying as a performer at Salford; something we would highly recommend, and that we are proud to be representatives of.”

The adjudicators have been confirmed as Brett Baker, Tom Hutchinson and Mark Wilkinson, who will have the tricky job of judging across the three different categories of Open, Intermediate and Youth. The contest will culminate in a final round including the top six finishers from each category, where the finalists will perform an alternative piece.

Prizes include online music lessons and consultations from Mark Wilkinson, Brett Baker or Tom Hutchinson, a voucher of £50 donated from Band Supplies Leeds to spend online/in store, and the choice of an original composition solo that has been written by composer Dan Price.

Entry forms must be submitted by 30th November. Video entries for the preliminary round must be submitted by 4th December 2021. Results for preliminary round will be announced 11th December. Video entries for the final must be submitted by 18th December. Final results will be announced 21st December. Further details and how to apply can be found at: www.smiobsc.com
