Musical Director Appointment at SWComms

Following a challenging audition process with all the candidates worthy of appointment, the SWComms Band are pleased to announce that Stephen Sykes has been appointed as the new Musical Director. Stephen comes from a well-known family in the brass band and wider musical world and has a wealth of experience to his name. Stephen is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) and is a Licentiate of Trinity College London for Trombone performance. He has previously occupied principal seats at the Tredegar, Fairey, Leyland, Cory, Black Dyke Mills and the National Youth Orchestra of GB. He has undertaken professional engagements with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Welsh National Opera, BBC NOW, Sinfonia Cymru and has performed as soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra, he was the first trombonist to be awarded the title ‘BBC Radio 2 Brass Soloist of the Year’ and also ‘Best Instrumentalist’ at the British Open. As a performer, he has won every major contest in the Brass Band calendar. The band are excited to be working with Stephen and look forward to growing together.
