ROSL Success for Slide Action
Trombone quartet Slide Action impressed judges yesterday evening (6th October) to win the final of the prestigious Royal Overseas League Mixed Ensemble Competition. The quartet of Huw Evans (alto and tenor), Benny Vernon (alto and tenor), Jamie Tweed (tenor) and Josh Cirtina (bass) met as students at the Royal Academy of Music in London and formed Slide Action in 2018. The group has enjoyed a great deal of success already having won the International Trombone Festival Trombone Quartet in Indiana last year and working with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London Philharmonic, London Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, City of Birmingham Symphony, and Welsh National Opera.
The group was delighted with the success, particularly within such a diverse category, and was also thrilled to receive a double honour when they were awarded the Philip Jones ‘Best Brass Ensemble’ prize too. A spokesperson for the group stated, “We can’t believe we won! Thanks so much to the Royal Overseas League for actually managing to put on a live event with an audience, and to Ursula Jones for founding the brass prize. Our congratulations to the other ensembles who were all fantastic.”
