Symphony Hall to host virtual Brass Gala

Each year, Symphony Hall welcomes the best Brass Bands from across the country to compete in the British Open, with some of the very best bands then performing the day after as part of the Brass Gala.

Owing to the pandemic this year, the venues remain closed with no British Open or Brass Gala. However, Symphony Hall is immensely proud to present a world-exclusive Virtual Brass Gala featuring one-off performances from Cory Band and Black Dyke Band, previously unreleased highlights of the last world tour by Mnozil Brass, and a specially-commissioned new composition called, ‘Legend of the Lockdown Leavers’ by Ryan Linham for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Department students who graduated this Summer during lockdown.

This virtual event will also feature interviews with Iwan Fox and 4Barsrest, Cory Band's Philip Harper and Black Dyke Band's Professor Nicholas Childs, concluding with a massed band performance from both bands, filmed during lockdown exclusively for Town Hall Symphony Hall.

Chris Proctor, Head of Programme at Town Hall Symphony Hall commented, “Since 1997, our Autumn Season has started with the annual Brass weekend in September, including the British Open Championship and Brass Gala. For the first time in over 20 years, the weekend of events is unable to take place in our venues. I'm so proud that, in partnership with 4Barsrest, we have been able to work with these brass bands and find ways to bring the music to audiences online. The future of Birmingham's Town Hall and Symphony Hall, and our future as the music charity responsible for them, looks very different from the plans we began the year with. Throughout this period, we remain committed to inspiring a love of live music, through performance, participation and learning across this city.”

The concert can be viewed on Facebook and YouTube on Friday 11th September at 7.00pm to watch the Virtual Brass Gala. Further information is available via https://www.thsh.co.uk/event/virtual-brass-gala
