International Brass Band Composer Competition (IBBCC)

With virtually no bands currently in operation due to the coronavirus pandemic, this has left composers and arrangers with little opportunity to have their music performed. However, an exciting initiative is being launched offering composer/arrangers the chance to have their music showcased through this new and innovative composition competition. There are some great prizes on offer with the overall winner receiving £100 in cash (sponsored by Besson), a license to the music playback programme NotePerformer*, which tremendously enhances the sound of your scores, and publication of the winning work through a new company which is being launched by Andrew Wainwright, BrookWright Music, whilst also receiving any associated royalties.

The five finalists will also have ‘follow-the-score’ videos of their pieces produced using NotePerformer and shared on youtube and across various social media platforms. In addition, a 'Public Commendation Prize' will be awarded to the finalist with the most 'likes' on youtube, while receiving a £100 gift voucher towards a Geneva instrument. The competition will be judged by an esteemed panel of experts: James Curnow, Dr Liz Lane and Paul Hindmarsh.

Composers are invited to submit a brass band composition/arrangement or multiple compositions/arrangements of no more than 5 minutes’ duration. Submissions should not already be published, but they do not necessarily need to be newly composed or arranged works. There are no restrictions on the style of the music. The closing date for entries is Friday 28th August 2020. For details of how to enter, please visit https://www.awainwrightmusic.com/composition-competition

Commenting on the competition, Andrew Wainwright said: "The lockdown has of course been a difficult time for everyone, but particularly composers and arrangers, who have lost out on the opportunity to have their music performed and it remains unclear how long it will be until this will be possible again. I know as a composer myself that it has been hard to find motivation when you don't know when your music will be performed again. It is my hope that this initiative will give composers the chance to work towards something and receive some publicity for their work, which is why we will be showcasing the five finalists in specially made 'follow-the-score' videos which will be shared all over social media. James Curnow, Dr Liz Lane and Paul Hindmarsh of course require little introduction and I'm delighted they have all agreed to be part of the judging panel. They bring with them a wealth of experience."

He continued, "The winning piece will also be published by a new company which is being launched, BrookWright Music, which will be publishing high-quality brass band and wind band music by a range of well-known and highly respected composers. The website, which is currently in development, will offer customers the chance to download PDFs immediately and peruse 'follow-the-score' videos of each item. Look out for more information about the launch of the company in the coming weeks."
