Foden’s Solo and Quartet Contest

Foden's Band has announced final plans ahead of its annual Solo and Quartet Contest on the 2nd November. The largest event of its kind in the country, this year the contest has attracted a record 135 entrants across 16 different categories and the adjudicators are Mike Lovatt, John Doyle and Mark Wilkinson, who will also work with young adjudicators selected from the Foden's Youth Band. As in previous years, piano accompanists will enhance the competitors’ performances and, during the day, they will benefit from a free master class hosted by top session trumpet player, Mike Lovatt, at which he will talk about his career, which includes performing on film tracks such as Harry Potter, Chicago, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Madagascar and more, along with general playing tips and advice. The event will be stewarded by members of Foden’s and provide hot food and homemade pastries.

On behalf of Foden's, Andy Rolfe commented: "Once again, we are delighted to be able to host this annual event and are extremely pleased with the number of competitors, which includes a large contingent travelling from Holland, Norway and Belgium. We would like to thank Kapitol Promotions and Brass Band World for their support, as well as Sandbach Music, Strings and Things, and our main sponsor, Geneva. Without support from these companies, we would be unable to host the contest."

Commenting on behalf of Kapitol Promotions and Brass Band World magazine, Philip Morris also commented: "We are pleased to have partnered Foden's in this event and support the ethos of the contest. Like Foden’s, we are keen to support the banding movement and fully support youth development.”

On behalf of the main sponsor Geneva, Brett Baker reflected: "The Geneva Group is delighted to support the Foden's Solo Contest, as this is very much related to our mission to encourage and support younger players as well as community banding. We want this aspect of playing to thrive and Foden's is one of the best at doing so - on this occasion before expert adjudicators in a central location, attracting international recognition. It gives us the chance to partner Foden’s, where our instruments are already being played by, for instance, the band's tenor horn section.”

The contest venue is Sandbach School, Crewe Road, CW11 3NS, and commences at 10.00am. All are invited to support the competitors.
