OHMI Competition

The OHMI Trust is a charity pioneering the development and adaptation of musical instruments for people who are physically disabled. The PHMI Competition challenges instrument makers, designers and technicians to create and develop musical instruments that can be played without the use of one hand and arm. It can be an adaptation of an existing instrument or a new design that emulates a traditional instrument.

Working with the instrument makers, the OHMI Trust then develops these award winning designs for a wide range of physical characteristics. A spokesperson for the charity stated, “Our instruments are sourced mainly from biennial OHMI Competition and from commissioned research and development. This really does enable people with physical disabilities to participate fully in music making, whether in school, as active amateurs or virtuoso professionals.”

Past instruments have included flutes, saxophones, recorders, a clarinet, guitar, several electronic instruments and even a bagpipe, whilst enabling equipment has been developed for most brass and woodwind instruments. These can all be viewed at https://www.ohmi.org.uk/the-competition.html The next competition will be open for submissions from 1stApril 2020 until May 2020. Judging will take place in June the same year. Further information can be obtained by emailing admin@ohmi.org.uk
