National Youth Brass Band of America
The inaugural National Youth Brass Band of America course, led by the inimitable figure of Prof David King, proved to be a life changing experience for the young musicians who took part.
In addition to the sectionals, lessons and rehearsals there were also a number of other clinics held throughout the week on a variety of topics to broaden the students’ musical horizons. These included a conducting clinic by Professor King who shared his thoughts on conducting, as well as valuable insights on musicianship in general. In addition there was also a composition lecture presented by Andrew Wainwright, which dealt with the role of each instrument within the band and a fascinating history presentation on brass band repertoire given by Helen Harrelson that included an interactive portion in which the ensemble played sections of test pieces.
The concert at the conclusion of the course was a superb event with Connor Johnson leading the band with distinction having been awarded the honour of becoming the very first principal cornet of the NYBBA. Commenting on the experience Connor stated: “The National Youth Brass Band of America was excellent, bringing together outstanding musicians for a great week of learning, and sending us all off with new connections, friends and knowledge. We can't wait to do it all again."
