SBBA to showcase Berlioz and Snell for Scottish Open
The Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) has announced that in order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of Berlioz a revised version of Howard Snell's arrangement of his overture 'Waverley' will test the competitors at the Scottish Open Championship in November. Howard Snell's arrangement was used as the Championship Section Area test-piece in 1984 and a revised version will be used for this contest. There will be further works by Snell showcased at the Perth Concert Hall as bands will also be required to perform a fanfare and contest march specially arranged by him. The connection does not end there with Howard Snell not only adjudicating part of the 2019 Contest, but also confirming that he will be writing a newly commissioned piece for the 2020 Scottish Open in celebration of SBBA’s 125th Anniversary.
SBBA also announced that the Band Supplies Scottish Challenge Shield will take place at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 30th November, with bands from Section 1-4 performing own-choice works. As the competition falls on St Andrew's Day, competitors are asked to perform works by Scottish composers. Details of the Scottish Youth Band Championships to be held on 23rd and 24th November will soon be announced.
