Success for Siobhan

Following a high energy final at Stoller Hall, Siobhan Bates was declared the winner of the 2019 BrassPass.tv Young Brass Award. Known to brass band audiences for her solo horn position at Black Dyke, the young student from Huddersfield University firmly set out her stall yesterday as a solo star of the future.

The final featured trumpeter Holly Clarke, two euphonium players Tobias Reifer and Peter McDonough as well as Siobhan, all skilfully accompanied by the reigning National Champions, Foden’s. The finalists all acquitted themselves with aplomb, however it was Siobhan’s programme of John Golland’s ‘Peace’ and the ‘Finale’ from Wilby’s ‘Fastasie Concertante’ that found favour with the judging panel of Dr Robert Childs, Lito Fontana and Kate Moore.

Speaking exclusively to BBW, Chair of the adjudicating Panel Robert Childs explained the decision: “The four young musicians we heard this evening were fantastic; they should all be very proud of the way they played. The technique on show was superb and it was a pleasure to listen to such accomplished playing. What really impressed us about Siobhan’s playing was her incredible dynamic range and musicality. It was a brave choice to begin with John Golland’s ‘Peace’, but it certainly paid off. She impressed us from the very first phrase and was totally deserving of the award.”
