Success for the ‘Salford Six Piece’

The Salford Six Piece were victorious in the 2019 University of Salford annual Ensembles Competition. Held at the University’s famous Peel Hall, five outstanding groups competed for the David Horsfield Ensemble Shield title sponsored by Geneva Musical Instruments.

The finalists were the 'Salford Six Piece', brass quintet 'Musical Chairs’, 'A Lower Brass Group' a quartet of foundation and first year students, and a Euphonium & Baritone ensemble called, 'Euph Gota be kidding me'.

Commenting on the event adjudicator Dr Brett Baker stated that he and his fellow judges Dr Robin Dewhurst and Simon Miller felt: "The standard on show at this event has grown each year, and the panel was thrilled to hear playing of the very highest quality. It made for a very difficult decision."

Eventually it was the 'Salford Six Piece' that took the top prize ahead of runners-up 'Musical Chairs'. The award for 'Best Arrangement or Composition' was won by final year student James Atkins.
