Euphonium-playing husband and wife, Steven and Misa Mead, have recorded a new CD of love duets – Christopher Thomas caught up with the couple to find out about the recording and their musical lives together.

PERCUSSION FOCUS
June edition brings a focus on percussion, with articles by ‘pro’ percussionists Sean Hooper, who offers advice on honing technique and Chinese-born Le Yu, who considers the exciting evolution that brass band percussion has undergone, as well as advises on four-mallet grips. Composer, Stephen Bulla - who provided music for the President’s Own United States Marine Band and Chamber Orchestra in Washington DC, also considers the percussion pallet.

Christopher Thomas makes Steven and Misa Mead’s recording, Love’s Joy, his CD of the Month and also reviews the ‘immensely enjoyable’ and groundbreaking Tubular Brass CD, whilst Thomas Dunne forecasts that Black Dyke’s Great Cinema Hits will be an ‘instant hit’ with the general public.

Thomas Dunne reviews the latest clutch of music to be released by Prima Vista Musikk, Wright and Round and The New York Staff Band.

Ralph Pearce savours Canadian Brass and the New York Staff Band at the latter’s 130th Festival in New York. Sam Wyne was at the Corn Exchange, Newbury, to hear Black Dyke’s high-profile Newbury Spring Festival performance. John Ward reclined in London’s Royal Albert Hall to take in Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s red-carpet ‘Brassed Off’ live screening with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, directed by Ludwig Wicki. Christopher Thomas took in the ‘sublime musical divinity’ of the latest Mnozil Brass show - Cirque - at Birmingham’s Town Hall.
