Let’s Debate: Power in the Hands of Bands

Adam Goldsmith, Producer and Senior Recording Engineer for World of Sound, which has recorded ten of the nominees for BBW’s 2017 Recording Awards, surveys the fast-moving changes to the audio and video recording landscape, from hard copy to digital consumption.

‘Streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, provide instant access to almost any song or piece of music that one can think of and this has inevitably led to a lot of people treating recorded music in a very disposable way. 2016 was a notable year in worldwide mainstream recorded music, in that revenue went up after two decades of a pretty much-uninterrupted decline. 2015 saw digital sales surpass physical formats for the first time and the inexorable rise of streaming services led to the eventual rise of revenue a year later. 2017 looks set to continue that trend, but all is not rosy in the music industry.’
