BBW Interview: Martyn Brabbins

Contributor, Christopher Thomas, chats to the Music Director of English National Opera, Martyn Brabbins, who last month returned to
 his brass band roots when he conducted Dalmellington Band in a programme also featuring The Wallace Collection at The Cumnock Tryst.

Links between brass bands and the classical musical world are all too precious these days, yet there is one prominent classical musician whose deeply engrained roots in brass banding remain almost unknown amongst the brass band fraternity.

That, however, changed last month as Martyn Brabbins - Musical Director of the English National Opera, globe-trotting conductor, champion of British and contemporary repertoire, and former euphonium and trombone player with Towcester Studio Band - conducted Dalmellington Band at Sir James MacMillan’s Cumnock Tryst festival in Ayrshire…
