In the past decade, the smartphone has had a profound impact on our interaction with our fellow humans. Its handiness in accessing digital space has put the World in our pocket. Access to digital platforms, such as Spotify from our ‘phones, has changed the way we consume music, making a vast legacy of recorded music instantly available. Social networking keeps us in constant touch with those who share our passion for brass bands around the World. We can listen to the best bands playing their best almost the same moment as those performances are being created.

However, for many of us this ‘phone-in virtual reality is a pale imitation of the real thing: nothing beats the atmosphere of live music; live music makes us feel human…
