Edward Gregson tribute concert at RCS
A very special tribute to the music of Edward Gregson will take the form of a concert in which some of the most significant works of one of the most influential and admired living composers for brass and wind will be performed. The concert will feature the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Brass Department and the cooperation band with invited soloists Andrew McMillan (tenor horn, Whitburn Band) and Hedley Benson (principal trumpet, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra). Edward Gregson himself will also appear as piano soloist in his stunningly beautiful Nocturne for Piano and Band.
Principal conductor of the cooperation band Katrina Marzella Wheeler will be musical director on the evening, alongside Mark Reynolds and John Logan of the RCS, in a celebration of Gregson’s remarkable contribution to contemporary UK music. A pre-concert talk by Edward will provide an amazing opportunity to listen to his own insights into his music and life. Also at this event, the young people of the Cooperation Youth Band will make their debut performance with Music for Greenwich.
The programme for the evening will be:
Opening Fanfare by Andrew Babu Jacob (world premiere)
Joseph Horovitz – Music Hall Suite
Thea Musgrave – Variations
Edward Gregson – Concertante for Piano and Brass Band – Nocturne, Symphony in Two Movements, Tenor Horn Concerto ‘Three Gods’, The Trumpets of the Angels
The concert takes place next Tuesday (28 October), starting at 7.30pm in the Stevenson Hall at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow. The pre-concert talk starts an hour earlier with Edward Gregson in conversation with conductor John Logan.
Katrina commented, “This event truly is a ‘musicians’ concert’ with a significant programme and rare chance to meet and chat with an esteemed composer like Edward Gregson. It is a celebration not only of Gregson’s extraordinary contribution to brass music but also of what’s possible when Scotland’s artistic community comes together.”
