Youth Banding Beyond Borders

Earlier this month, Lewis Barton (cornet) and Alice Clarke (horn) from The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain were in Switzerland, taking part in the Nationale Jugend Brass Band (NJBB) of Switzerland’s week-long summer course, as part of the 2nd Besson Horizons musical exchange.  The NJBB course, also marked their 50th jubilee year, led by world-renowned conductor Allan Withington.

Now in its second year, the Besson Horizons exchange is a unique international partnership between The NYBBGB and NJBB, supported by leading brass manufacturer Besson Brass. The initiative gives two young musicians from each country the chance to join the other’s summer course, deepening musical education, forging friendships and strengthening cultural ties through the universal language of music.

Lewis Barton commented, “I believe the exchange programme is a vital part of connecting young brass players internationally. It offers an amazing opportunity to explore new cultures, repertoire and environments which can help shape young musicians to grow and develop in their fields.”

Alice Clarke explained, “To be part of this exchange is a real privilege. Only two NYBBGB members go each year, so to be chosen is incredibly exciting. I've made new friends in Switzerland and worked with professional musicians we wouldn't usually have the opportunity to meet.”

This July, Lewis and Alice immersed themselves in Swiss brass band culture, performing specially written repertoire in beautiful venues across Switzerland. In return, Lauriane David and Julie Pralong, both cornet players from NJBB, will join The NYBBGB’s summer course in the UK this August under the musical direction of Martyn Brabbins.

NYBB CEO Mark Bromley, concluded, “This is about nurturing a lifelong passion for music and building friendships that span borders. A huge thank you to NJBB for the warm welcome — and to Besson for their continued support of this inspiring international partnership.”
