Kate Moore receives Pioneer Award

Kate Moore, Principal Trumpet of the BBC Concert Orchestra has been awarded the highly prestigious Pioneer Award by the International Women’s Brass Conference.
The award recognises women who have been pioneers in the top levels of brass performance, breaking down barriers and living their lives effecting change for those who have followed, and Kate is the first British recipient of the award.
Kate was inspired to learn an instrument at the age of 12 by Eric Taylor, the local bandmaster in St Keverne village, Cornwall. His military style of direction was both formidable and inspiring and was responsible for Kate eventually pursuing a professional career in music, spanning over 40 years. She accepted a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, initially joint first study cornet and singing, before going on to study trumpet with Maurice Murphy, Crispian Steele-Perkins and Paul Cosh.
Kate was appointed Principal Cornet with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 1987 and Section Principal Trumpet in 2000 and is often heard with the orchestra on BBC Radio 2 and 3. Kate has been invited to perform as guest principal with many of the UK's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House and the English Chamber Orchestra and has recently performed the Haydn, Aratunian and Pakhmutova concertos.
Kate is also in demand as a session player. Her discography includes various genres; TV and film scores, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, Planet Earth, Inception, Skyfall, Spectre, Solo: A Star Wars story, among many others; popular artists, Sting, Elbow, Florence and the Machine; jazz artists Gregory Porter, James Morrison; and classical artists Joseph Calleja and Renée Fleming.
In a statement on social media a spokesperson for the BBC Concert orchestra commented, “We are delighted for and very proud of our Principal Trumpet Kate Moore.” The award also warranted a mention on BBC Radio 3, with In Tune presenter Katie Derham adding her praise for Kate on her magnificent and ground-breaking achievement.
