2021 New Zealand National Championships

Wellington claimed the A Grade National title for the seventh time in nine years at the recent New Zealand National Championships. Ably led by MD David Bremner, who once again takes home the KGL Smith Cup, the young band not only won the Gold Cup trophy but also collected a plethora of other accolades. These awards included being category winners in the Test-Piece and Sacred Item sections in addition to principal cornetist Toby Pringle winning the Outstanding Soloist in the Set Work and the ‘Best Section’ being awarded to the horn section.

Woolston Brass, who had the home crowd advantage, took the runners-up spot, just missing out on the title by only a 1.5 point margins. The band still had plenty to celebrate however, with a victory in the Own-Choice category and Anthony Smith winning the ‘Outstanding Principal Cornet’ for his part in the performance of Philip Harper’s ‘Explorers on the Moon’. The final podium place was taken by a delighted North Shore Brass.

Congratulations are also well deserved by Brass Whanganui, Woolston Concert Brass, Matamata Brass and Buzzing Brass Wellington Youth who won their respective grades. Full results can be found below.
