2020 National Finals in Britain cancelled due to pandemic

Kapitol Promotions Ltd., which presents the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, today (9 July) issued a statement confirming that it has cancelled the two Finals events for Section 1 – 4 bands at The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse, on 26 – 27 September, and for the for Championship Section at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 10 October.

It will be the first time since the 1939 outbreak of World War II that the event will not go ahead in London and would have been the 75th edition since the end of the War in 1945.
Aware that the ten-event National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain represents the backbone of the UK’s brass band culture, Kapitol Promotions told BBW that it had delayed cancelling the two Finals events as long as possible in the hope that they would be able to take place. However, the Company’s Philip Morris stated: “Because of the current public health safety issues, regretfully we have had to cancel the Finals of the 2020 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this might have caused bands, but the current circumstances surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic are beyond our control and, obviously, public safety must be our first priority.”

Philip Morris also advised: “If your band has already paid the entry fee, please email or telephone me to arrange the method of a refund.”

Bands that won trophies at last year’s Finals may retain them until July 2021, subject to adequate insurance being in place. Alternatively, they can return their trophies to Kapitol Promotion’s offices at: Leshons Buildings, Cornerswell Road, Penarth. CF64 2XS.
