National Youth Brass Band of Wales impress in North Wales International Music Festival
The National Youth Brass Band of Wales gave a thrilling performance as part of the prestigious North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph Cathedral on Saturday 16th September.
Conducted by Ian Porthouse, the programme included Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man', William Mathias's 'Vivat Regina', and 'Taliesin', a new commission from the pen of Rhian Samuel. Guest sololist, Dewi Griffiths dazzled both audience and band alike with his impressive playing in the challenging Edward Gregson 'Cornet Concerto'. Speaking about the concert Dewi commented, "I thoroughly enjoyed the NYBBW concert in St Asaph as part of the North Wales International Music Festival. It was once again a real honour ro perform the Edward Gresgon Cornet Concerto and an even bigger honour to have Professor Gregson in the audience listening." He continued, "Thanks to Ty Cerdd and the NYBBW for having me. Hopefully it won't be too long before I can work with this great bunch of musicians again!"
The concert marked the final outing for the NYBBW under the umbrella of Ty Cerdd. Formed in 1982 by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation, the National Youth Band has provided wonderful musical opportunities for the most talented brass and percussion players in the country for 35 years. From this point forward the NYBBW will now be run by the newly formed National Youth Arts Wales.
Deborah Keyser, Director of Ty Cerdd, commented: "We are immensely proud of the work Ty Cerdd has delivered with, and for, Wales's very best young musicians over quarter of a century. It's been an immense privilege to play such an important part in their musical development and to provide them with such valuable and enjoyable experiences. We wish National Youth Arts Wales every success as they take over this important work, and look forward to supporting them to engage with Welsh music and composers."
