New ‘Pro’ MD for Ratby

Ratby Co-operative Band has appointed of Mareika Gray as Professional Musical Director - an integral role within the new musical structure of the organisation.

The well-established community band comprises five different ensembles, ranging from Beginner and Junior Bands, to its well- respected Championship Band. Mareika will provide the musical leadership and creative direction for the whole of the organisation in addition to her conducting duties with the senior band. The role will also see Mareika work alongside Ratby's team of conductors and band trainers to develop the organisation, promoting youth development and community music-making in the heart of Leicestershire.

The partnership marks a new era for Ratby, now poised to appoint an Associate Musical Director to work closely with Mareika as part of a conducting team.
Speaking about her appointment, Mareika said: "I'm delighted to be taking on this position. Whilst rehearsing the band for the ‘Masters’ contest, I felt the relationship worked and I'm now looking forward to working with all of the Ratby bands. It's a privilege to be part of such a well-structured organisation that promotes and encourages musical education for younger people. I've always enjoyed working with bands that have a family atmosphere and Ratby is no exception."

The appointment also marks a unique female link as Mareika follows in the pioneering footsteps of the great Betty Anderson, who took the band to the Grand Shield title in 1978 - a feat Mareika accomplished with Milnrow in 2013.

Ratby Band Chairman, Steve Plant, commented: "We're pleased to be able to continue to work with Mareika following a fantastic debut result at the All-England Masters in May. We will now spend the summer months continuing to develop our musical relationship ahead of the autumn contesting season, with further announcements on the appointment of a new Associate MD made in due course."
