Allan Withington's Conductor Summer School

How do we interpret music? Are there any rules? Which words and actions do we use to help our bands interpret different genres of music? Exactly how do we help? How does a dancer set to movement the music we play and, indeed, the way in which we play it? How can a vocalist relate his or her breath control to the playing of wind instruments? Can a brass/wind band play big band music or Monteverdi, Mozart and Wagner?

“We believe they can and we are willing to share our expertise at our next international Conductors’ Summer School that runs from 2-8 July this year in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands,” said leading conductor and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra trumpeter, Allan Withington.

He added: “These and many more artistic questions will be answered at the Conductor Summer School, which promises to be another memorable meeting of conductors from all over Europe.

“We have asked the local weatherman to order fantastic weather, as usual, which, coupled with the cosy atmosphere of downtown Leeuwarden, with its array of bars and restaurants, once again provides the makings of a truly great week.

The course fee of Euro 499.99 includes all tuition, accommodation, transport to and from Schipol Airport, the cost of postage and all course material, sent one month before the course.

The course covers: Conducting technique (including one-to-one sessions with Allan); effective rehearsal planning and score reading; creative programme planning; problem solving and interaction with a guest band; musical interpretation through the medium of song and dance; and people management and performance psychology.

Open to all ages and abilities, students take part in and help to create the final Gala Concert with Soli Brass, in the grounds of a disused prison. Parts of the course involve student interviews and the final concert will be recorded, and could form the basis of an exciting new TV project.

To book, contact Allan Withington or Course Administrator, Anja Abma.
