Double Delight for Tredegar at the BBC Proms
“Brass bands are a bedrock of British musical life, yet rarely celebrated at the Proms. Great news, then, that one of the best – Tredegar Band, from South Wales are featured twice in quick succession.” This was how The Times announced Tredegar Band’s double appearance at this year’s BBC Proms series at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Tredegar will feature in Prom 30 on Monday 8th August alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with Ryan Bancroft to perform the world premiere work of Gareth Higgins’: ‘Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra’. Commenting on social media the composer stated, “I’m so pleased to finally announce this prom with my new ‘Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra’. It’s been a real passion project this, something I dreamt up fifteen years ago and has finally come to fruition thanks to Meurig Bowen and endless effort from Lisa Tregale. You all probably know how passionately I feel about this medium - it’s important and doesn’t get anywhere near the exposure it deserves - and it’s just the best feeling to be able to show off this band. It’s a real monster of a piece, probably the biggest thing I’ve ever written - just getting everyone onto the stage is in itself a small miracle. But, bringing together my faves Tred, Ryan, Ian, and my home team BBCNOW will be special.”
Gavin continued with effusive praise for Tredegar and previewed their second Proms performance, ‘Prom 32: Late-Night Brass’ which will take place the next night on August 9th at 10.15pm. The band promises that the audience can expect, “a typical Tredegar Band brass party - with everything from Berlioz and Strauss to Judy Garland and a reprise of Slipknot’s ‘The Devil in I’ arranged by the one and only Paul Saggers. This brass band/heavy metal mash up is not to be missed!”
