Grimethorpe announces Liz Lane as Composer-in-Association

On International Women’s Day Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced the appointment of Liz Lane as its new Composer-in-Association, taking flight with the launch of ‘Enchanted Light’, a new work in Liz’s Bluebird series.

GCB musical director, David Thornton said, “Liz has been a significant voice within brass band music for some time now. I have worked with her on several fantastic projects in the
past and I had no hesitation in approaching her when the opportunity came up. We are already planning an exciting musical landscape for the band, obviously including Liz’s music, but she is also helping us shape our general artistic outlook and ambitions. I believe it is a fundamental requirement for a band like Grimethorpe to be performing quality music and to be a leader in artistic endeavour within the movement. Liz will have a vital role in helping us achieve this.”

On her new appointment Liz Lane said, “I am thrilled to become a part of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band creative team in the role of Composer-in-Association. I have been an admirer of the band's artistic work for many years and they were the first brass band introduced to me as a child by my grandfather. I look forward to many exciting future collaborations.”

Enchanted Light is a new work that forms part of the ‘Bluebird’ series of miniature songs. The collection features music by Liz, performances by soprano singer Belinda Evans plus various collaborative guest artists. The songs are inspired by times of isolation & reflection, connecting through creative collaboration. Enchanted Light is a collaboration between Liz, Belinda, Grimethorpe, as well as Colin Booth (performing on the ottavino – a kind of miniature spinet), poet Carole Bent and animator Gary Andrews.

The band also acknowledges and sincerely thanks Lukas Greiwe and Sam Johnston for their beautiful work producing the sound and visuals. The performance of 'Enchanted Garden' can be viewed on the band's Facebook page via this link: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=192878182175261
