RNCM Cornet Day

Join the RNCM on Sunday 29 March for an inspiring day of learning with two of the country’s leading cornet players: RNCM tutors Dr Roger Webster and Richard Marshall. Designed for enthusiastic players of ABRSM Grade 6 or equivalent, participants will benefit from masterclasses and tuition, covering areas such as performance, technique and ensemble work. Delegates will also have the opportunity to perform with piano accompaniment before taking part in an informal concert for family and friends.

This day is distinctive in relation to the quality of coaching provided by players and teachers who’ve reached the highest levels of performance and education in the music industry. It aims to develop in each musician the importance of a whole mind and body approach to communicating music through their instrument.

Students who would benefit from this course may be:
·       A student preparing for conservatoire entrance auditions
·       A music education student planning a career in a performance setting or postgraduate study
·       A music enthusiast wishing to enhance their musical experience by working with the RNCM as part of a professional development experience.

Participants will be taught by Professor Roger Webster, Senior Tutor in Cornet, trumpet and performance psychology and Richard Marshall, RNCM Tutor in Cornet. Roger has been playing at the highest level with brass bands for over three decades. As a principal cornet player, he has spent 10 years with Black Dyke, seven with CWS Glasgow, a brief period at Brighouse and Rastrick, and was longstanding principal cornet of Grimethorpe Colliery. Alongside his above commitments, Roger has also been active as a soloist throughout, visiting over 25 countries and performing in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls. Richard is one of the finest cornet players of his generation, he began playing at the age of nine. In 1996, aged 19, he became principal cornet of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a position he held for 10 years. During this time he gained a BA (Hons) in Band Studies and an LRSM in Bandmastership. Richard is currently principal cornet of the world famous Black Dyke Band, a position that is known as the ‘hottest seat in banding’.
