When Tuba Come One Win

Tuba quartet, When Tuba Come One, was declared the winner of the Bernard Brown Brass Ensemble Prize, following a thrilling evening’s performances on Monday 3rd February. The final took place in the beautiful Bradshaw Hall at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where world-renowned trombone quartet, Bones Apart, presided as the adjudicating panel.

The final included high quality performances from Eastside Brass Quintet, Brass House Trombone Quartet and Lux Brass as well as from the eventual winners, When Tuba Come One. The innovative brass chamber ensemble comprises: Amy Ewen (baritone, Benjamin Smith (euphonium), James Hobbis (tuba) and Mark Dilley (tuba). The group aims to bring lower brass music to a wider audience, stating: “We work hard to make something of a niche genre into an accessible medium to audiences of all different backgrounds and musical persuasions.” Commenting on social media the quartet was quite clearly delighted with the achievement, “We are extremely proud that we are the winners of the Bernard Brown Ensemble Prize 2020. Thank you to Bones Apart Trombone Quartet for deciding the final result and also for the fantastic feedback after our performance.”

This success comes hot off the heels of the announcement of the group’s Composition Competition. Launched in an attempt to expand tuba quartet repertoire and “push boundaries of our music making in as many exciting directions as possible”, the ensemble is offering the winning submission £300 prize money, a professional recording and regular performances as part of their concert series. If you’ve ever wanted to write for tuba quartet, now is the perfect time and it seems When Tuba Come One is the perfect group.
