New signing at Grimethorpe

Grimethorpe Colliery Band is delighted to announce the appointment of Sarah Lenton as its new Principal Baritone. Sarah will make her contesting debut with Grimethorpe at the forthcoming National Championship finals at the Royal Albert Hall in October.

Sarah has spent the last few years playing with some of the UK’s leading brass bands including Foden’s and, most recently, the Leyland Band. Sarah studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and will be releasing her new solo CD in early 2020.

The new Musical Director of Grimethorpe, Dr. David Thornton, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Sarah to the Grimethorpe ranks. I have known Sarah for many years and seen her grow into a player of great renown and an experienced and talented soloist. She joins us at an exciting time. The band members are looking forward to working with Sarah to ensure that Grimethorpe continues to build upon its unique history in artistic and performance excellence.

Sarah said: “I am thrilled to be joining the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. There are no more famous names in the world of brass bands and to have the opportunity to play with such a great team of players and with David recently joining the band as MD – I’m sure the future for the band is going to both exciting and positive. I am thrilled to have been asked to play a part in it.”

A spokesperson for the band said that Grimethorpe wished to pay tribute to its departing Baritone artist Mike Cavanagh. “The band members are sorry to see Mike leave. For the past 5 years Mike played a key role in the band’s success and is an exemplary musician and bandsman. We wish him great success in his future career.”
