Queen's birthday honours for Robertson and Weeks
Michael Robertson has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for Services to Music in Angus in Scotland, and Nigel Weeks has been awarded the Queen's Service Medal for services to music in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Michael the conductor of the Carnoustie & District Youth Band has been inspirational to the band since its formation in 2008, leading them to incredible success, including multiple Scottish Youth Championship and National Youth Championship titles as well as taking them on a once in a lifetime tour to China in 2018. Born in Alloa, he attended the Royal College of Music and worked for many years as a brass instructor with Tayside and more latterly with Angus Council. He was awarded the Mortimer Medal in 2011 from the Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of his services for teaching of young people in the brass band movement.
In the 25 years since emigrating to New Zealand, Nigel has made a hugely significant impact on the brass band movement in the country, including winning the A Grade National title with Dalewool Auckland Brass on three occasions. He also led the band to the Australian National title three times and gained the distinction of leading the National Band of New Zealand on two occasions, including to the World Music Championships in Kerkrade.
