Cinematic Scope at 2018 Black Dyke Festival

Black Dyke’s Brass Festival, at Leeds Town Hall on 3 June this year, promises to be another highlight culminating in a Gala Concert with a World première of ‘cinematic proportion’, all of which has been made possible by National Lottery funding through the Arts Council England.

The day starts with workshops for cornets led by Richard Marshall, flugels, horns and baritones led by Katrina Marzella, Zoe Hancock and Siobhan Bates, and Lower Brass with Harry Cunningham, Dan Thomas and Black Dyke’s 2018 Soloist-in-Residence, Les Neish.

Following the success of last year’s Conductors’ Spotlight, Black Dyke’s Director of Music, Professor Nicholas Childs, will lead another Conductors’ Spotlight accompanied by a live workshop band, which will give conductors a real insight into technique and contest/concert performance preparation. Places will be limited, so prospective candidates should email the band’s Manager, David Hirst, at: secblackdykeband@btinternet.com

The spectacular 3.00pm Gala Concert will showcase Black Dyke performing new repertoire, including music from James Bond, a Soloists’ Showcase and the World première of 'Cinema for Organ and Brass Band' by Philip Wilby. The work combines Black Dyke, the Town Hall’s magnificent organ and international tuba soloist, Les Neish. The grand finale will see Black Dyke also joined on stage by over 200 musicians from Armthorpe Elmfield, Friezland, Delph, City of Bradford, BD1 and Buckley bands performing such classics as 'Dambusters', 'I’ll Walk with God' and Respighi’s triumphant 'March from the Pines of Rome'.

Registration for the Workshops, which cost £5.00 each is at 9:30am, after which instrumentalists will be taken through warming-up, exploring practice regimes and sight-reading, as well as play exciting ensemble work.
