Worshipful Company awards Iles and Mortimer medals

The Worshipful Company of Musicians has announced that the 2018 Iles Medal is to be awarded to the Managing Director of SATCOL - Trevor Caffull and the Mortimer Medal to the Musical Director of the Beaumaris Youth Band organisation, Gwyn Evans.

Making the announcement, the Chairman of the Worshipful Company’s Brass Band Committee - Philip Morris, told BBW: “Both recipients are very worthy contributors to brass band community. In his capacity as MD of SATCOL, Trevor Caffull has supported major brass band events, livestreaming and recording enterprises, whilst Gwyn Evans is one of the unsung heroes of Welsh youth brass band development.”

As MD of The Salvation Army Trading Company, Trevor Caffull established the largest distributor of brass recordings worldwide, World of Brass; acquired B&H Sound (now World of Sound) and the historic brass publishing house, R. Smith & Co.; and expanded Brass in Concert Championships from a one-day event at Spennymoor, to a two-day festival, positioned in the Sage Gateshead. A director of Black Dyke Band, Trevor is also a member of The Salvation Army’s flagship brass band - The International Staff Band and Band Sergeant for Kettering Corps. Other corps leadership roles have included YP Band Leader (Bristol Easton) and Deputy Bandmaster (Croydon).

Gwyn Evans is the main motivator and MD of Beaumaris Band and its youth outfit, leading it from Section 4 to the Championship Section, and winning the Section 1 National Championships, the Senior Trophy and
All-England International Masters. Gwyn has also spent years developing young brass instrumentalists in North Wales. As a brass tutor with William Matthias Music Service, he led the Gwynedd and Môn County Brass Band to three National Youth Championship of Great Britain titles, as well as Beaumaris Youth Band to the Youth Entertainment Championships of Great Britain title and a Music For Youth National Festival title. Currently
a National Youth Brass Band of Wales Advisory Panel member, Gwyn regularly develops new repertoire with Norwegian school and community bands, and led Beaumaris Youth Band’s tour of Stavanger in 2015.
