National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain visits Cheltenham and Wells

The 80-strong National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) is to perform at Cheltenham Town Hall (6 April) and Wells Cathedral (7 April.)

Guest soloist for both concerts will be legendary cornet virtuoso Richard Marshall, principal cornet of Black Dyke Band, arguably the most successful brass band in the world.

The NYBBGB, which is by audition only, features some of the best brass-playing young musical talent from the UK, and will be led by Artistic Director Bramwell Tovey, who was appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in January.

The concert will include Wilfred Heaton’s Variations, Dorothy Gates Faith, Liz Lane’s Tide and Time and Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Forster’s Corpse.

Philip Biggs, the NYBBGB’s administrator, said: “If you’ve not heard the NYBBGB before, it’s a truly inspirational experience. The performance by the triple-size brass band will be made extra special as it will be led by maestro Bramwell Tovey and will feature guest soloist, Richard Marshall, one of the world’s finest cornet soloists.”

The concerts will be the conclusion of a week-long residential course at Taunton School in Somerset, which is being held between 31 March and 7 April. Tutors for the course will be led by some of the UK’s leading brass and percussion players, including Richard Marshall, Mark Wilkinson, Lucy Cutt, Owen Farr, Katrina Marzella-Wheeler, Chris Jeans, Les Neish, Mark Landon and John Maines.

Tickets are priced £10 and £5 (concessions) for Cheltenham and £14 and £10 (concessions) for Wells. Both concerts start at 7.30pm. Tickets are available via http://nybbgb.com/whats-on.html and concession tickets are available by calling 01223 234090.
