Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2018

The Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2018 is the network's nationwide search for talented young brass musicians, providing performers with the chance to develop their future musical ambitions and showcase their talents. The competition is open to brass players resident in the UK aged 16 to 21.

Al Booth, Specialist Music Editor, Radio 2, said of the competition: "Brass band music is such an important part of UK culture and Radio 2 is proud to support the next generation of musicians from the banding world. Over the years we have seen some tremendously talented young people come through this competition, and the profile of the awards have gone from strength to strength because of this. It's so rewarding to see that a love of brass band music is still thriving amongst our young musicians, and continues to remain a truly cross generational genre."

From the initial entries, eight successful semi-finalists will be invited to record up to 10 minutes of music of their own choice with Foden's Band at the BBC Studios in Salford on Saturday 10th February. Judges will then select four players to perform in the final. This will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 from the Royal Northern College of Music Manchester on Friday 20th April.

The chosen Award recipient will win the chance to perform on Radio 2's 'Listen to the Band' programme as well as securing a broadcast performance with an established group.

The 2018 competition is now open for applicants. All entrants should be UK residents aged between 16 and 21 years old on November 30th 2017. Entry forms and recordings must arrive by 23:59 on 30 November 2017. Application form and further details are available here.
